How to get Kids to Eat on a sick day.

I promised my little ones Grilled Cheese and Soup today… A nice simple comfort food and a perfect remedy for a sick day.

My son spent most of the day sleeping curled up in a thick blanket on pillows and my daughter most of the day colouring while I worked.  This is/was their first stay at home sick day since starting kindergarten.  I wanted a relatively easy  dinner so I could attend their needs and still finish my work, deadlines stop for no one, even for illness. They both ate very little during the day. Poor babes had little appetite so I had to make our regular meal more interesting to get some calories in them. My answer make it look like breakfast.

With aid of a waffle maker, simple grilled cheese sandwiches can be made to look fun… quick easy and definitely a hit.

Waffle Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

  • Butter the outsides of two slices of soft bread
  • Fill with sliced Cheese
  • Grill in a waffle maker
  • Garnish with Pickles & a dollop of Ketchup

Use Every Scrap and make it Count.

Use Every Scrap and make it Count Cute. I have several odds and ends of fabric that aren’t big enough to make aprons but may be useful else where.. I want to stick with the home/entertaining theme so I whipped these up. There is a Turquoise and brown Set as well as a Polka Dot Set.

The Fun thing about these is that they will add a little pizazz to your next party, serve a useful function and are reusable as they are washable. Really much more economical than throw away napkins.

What do you do with your scrap fabric, how do you intend to use it? Or other things around your house.

Vegas Travel, and a mystery Sale!

Image

I am going to Vegas next week and I know almost nothing about it except for A) the strip and B) we are close to the Grand Canyon… we will be hitting up both.

In honor of my first visit I am having a Sale… A mystery Sale in my apron shop… I don’t know what the discount will be but they will range between 10% & 50% Using couponcodes between SAVE1-6… I will roll a die vegas style, use random.org or have my kids pull a number out of a hat. I will change it up every so often and will announce it on my facebook page, or twitter and update the side bar.

The first code is SAVE1 but that is going to change soon!

Here is what my  etsy research led to, I wanted to  see what others thought of it and what was memorable… I am looking forward to some great mid century Kitsch.

Game on!

quickie post about ipiccy.

Since the demise of picnik, and my complete lack of iphoto/photoshop prowess I have turned to ipiccy for my photo edit needs (I tried a few and a few more ). It is simple, easy to use and gives me what I want, something to use on my product shots. And for those that love layers- it does those too!

Someday I will be able to buy all the fancy smanchy equipment and learn the ‘real’ photo editing software to take my product photos to the next level but until then, this is what I have and I will find a way to make it work me.

Try it out.

This is my new line of modern bistro aprons….

Collaborations, a new Start and getting Stuff done.

I have a new collaborator! A very exciting Seattle based group- Showcase Seattle, who want to support local artists on a global stage. I had my first meeting with them last Tuesday and since then I have been digesting what we discussed. I am thrilled and excited and am ready to take my business to the next level.

I love making aprons and I love making the kitschy fun retro aprons, but they can take start to finish anywhere from *5hrs  to 3 days or more to make. Time wise not very efficient or cost effective.

So what does this have to do with taking my craft from hobby to business? One thing that Showcase Seattle got me thinking about was numbers, audience and experience.

Numbers, can I make enough aprons to meet my financial goals?

Audience, who has been my audience, can I open that up and reach a wider one?

What is the experience I offer and can I build on that and make it better?

I answered Heck Yeah, to all those questions. I am exponentially building momentum and launching a  new apron that I call the Modern Bistro Apron. Yes a modern apron but still with my signature style- designed by me, same quality, same attention to detail and same goal- to make you feel good about doing the things that you do everyday.

The Modern Bistro apron, is great for summer, outdoor entertaining, being the proprietor of your very own cafe serving drinks and plating entrees. It has  three large 9″ pockets to keep the tools of the trade and wrap around waist ties that are the signature of the bistro look- great for tucking a note pad or towel into.

Soon there will be complementary accessories and full Modern Bistro Aprons.  And as soon I am  on my way to reaching my goals I will continue to make the retro/vintage styled aprons.

Thank you Showcase Seattle. If anybody else is interested in this program here is how it works.

* 5-6hrs is my working day, my balance for being mummy to two 5yr olds, a wife and making sure I don’t get lost… plus somebody has to make fabulous meals.

French Fries: a cooking post.

What We had for Dinner

Mine is Veggie- not nearly as much fun I know…

For those of you that followed my old blog(s), you know that I love to cook, I even considered myself a food blogger. And ultimately it is what got me back into sewing, hence the apron. I wanted to cook healthy meals and be a positive example for my children.

In the earlier years it was easy to cook fresh foods for my kids, they ate it, they didn’t know what it was, but they ate it (I used to give them veggie dogs). I have always tried to lead their food choices by example. But as they get older their reach grows and they are influenced by so many other things, often times making healthy food choices harder.

For example: They will not eat potatoes anymore, unless they come in the form of a french fry or a chip. I blame that mostly on restaurants. Now that they are in school, extra curricular activities and out with friends, meals are more & more often eaten outside the home. As most parents know, fries or chips are just about the only side you can get with kid meals, and I am not talking about McDonalds, (sparing you my views- we just do not go there). I order a salad, they order fries… I am not going to force them to eat what I eat, so if I can not beat the status quo I will join it. I will make my own fries at home.

Firstly I tried thick cut oven baked “fries”, and sure enough they ate them … then I tried roasted potatoes in cubes, exact same method, different shape and that was an absolute no go.

I like oven baked “fries”, they are healthier and you can spice them up anyway you want but they are a pain in the butt to cut evenly. Quite frequently I bake some to a crisp and others remain slightly under cooked. Secret #1 for this post- I have terrible knife skills.

So I bought a French Fry cutter, secret #2- as a teenager one of my jobs was at New York Fries (shh). Finally I have a tool that makes us all happy. I don’t have to do all that slicing and they get “fries” again…

Billie helping out- It is way harder than it looks…

First cut the bottom off of one to three russet potatoes to make them steady as they are in the cutter.

Use a lot of pressure and try to press evenly. I had to put my slicer on a lower table and use my body weight to press down.

Once they are all sliced, rinse and soak in water spiked with baking soda 1/2-1 tsp for about half an hour. While they are soaking preheat oven to 425f, and line one to two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Drain and pat dry. Place in a bowl, drizzle with olive oil, I used 2 good glugs or about 2 tbsp. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt and or other flavours.

Spread out evenly on your baking sheets in a single layer and bake for about 20 mins, rotating the sheets half way through top to bottom if they are on different shelves.

Remove from oven and serve immediately!

Yum, and though they know that I baked them, they don’t get the whole fried thing of french “fries”- hence the quotation marks.

Inspiration Wednesday….Kitchen Lust.

I love cooking, I love design and these beauties caught my eye. I strained my head to see them as my husband whizzed us by. I resisted the urge to yell stop! Alas I wish I had, when I went back to the  shop, it was closed… Now I have to wait till I can get there again. Maybe they will be sold, maybe not and if not then I think I will have to buy them.

I am inspired by their shape, colour and number to be in my kitchen making foods to eat then serve.

Art Tote bag made by my big Winnings!

This past February I won some fabric from Contemporary Cloth. I was at a scientific conference with my husband and all of his colleagues thought I was a bit batty for doing a little seat jig during lunch.

Wouldn’t you?

My Favourite little carry all bag finally bit the dust, so I picked it apart and made a new one with the lovely selection that I won. This is pretty much a mock up, I re-used the handles from the old one, a reusable tote from Lulu Lemon

This is just the first bag… I was so happy with it that I want to make another… and have a quick little giveaway! These are made with some pretty bold fabrics, if you would like to win one… One winner, just leave a comment in comments Ends Friday 9pm PST.
