This is Just to Say, a poem by William Carlos Williams

This is Just to Say

Art work Based on “This is Just to Say” by William Carlos Williams

This is one of my favourite poems… The imagery is so clean and so precise.

This is Just to Say

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

William Carlos Williams.

I love that food plays a central part of this slightly passive agressive grab at control as the coveted sweet plums are snatched away.

*Here I am playing in illustrator again, still have a long way to go!

  1. Hi, I’m an English teacher at a German Waldorf school, I love the illustration and would like to reprint it in article about classwork on the poem in our school yearbook (non-commerical use, circulated in school community only). Would you give your permission?
